Coalville
Coalville is a town situated in the district of North West Leicestershire, within the East Midlands region of England. The town is positioned along the A511 road, between Leicester and Burton upon Trent, and is near junction 22 of the M1 motorway, where the A511 intersects with the A50, which connects Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Leicester. To the east, Coalville borders the Charnwood Forest uplands.
Coalville is twinned with the town of Romans-sur-Isère, located in southeastern France.
Historical Background
Coalville emerged during the Industrial Revolution, primarily as a coal mining hub in northern Leicestershire. The town’s name reflects its coal-mining heritage. It has been suggested that the name comes from ‘Coalville House,’ the residence of the founder of Whitwick Colliery. However, a more definitive origin is found in an article from the Leicester Chronicle dated 16 November 1833. The report described how the development of railways and new collieries on previously unproductive land had dramatically increased property values, turning the area into a thriving community. The article noted that this growing settlement was to be called “Coalville” — a fitting name for the new town.
I have lived in Coalville since 2014, having previously moved from Ashby-de-la-Zouch. I enjoy exploring the town and capturing its essence through photography. Additionally, I am a member of the Coalville & District Photographic Society.
